Why should organizations resolve not to accept tobacco sponsorship?

  1. Allowing the tobacco manufacturers to sponsor events usually entails allowing them to advertise their products at the event and on their own company's marketing materials.

  2. Donations to charities and sponsoring fun , healthy events softens the concept of tobacco—it’s harder to believe tobacco is a deadly poison when you associate it with music, sports or charitable works.

  3. One study showed that tobacco companies’ sponsorship reaped so much brand exposure that the value was more than twice the dollar amount it would have cost for equivalent advertising.

  4. Tobacco companies gain tax reductions for their contributions to nonprofit organizations, which frees up funding for production and marketing of its harmful products.

  5. Many organizations have a mission to promote the well being of the community it serves.  Is accepting tobacco dollars consistent with that mission?

How does accepting tobacco money harm kids?  Some surprising facts:

Tobacco sponsorship is believed to profoundly influence youth attitudes and smoking behaviors.

Sponsorship has a similar effect upon children as advertising does.  Most studies of tobacco sponsorship agree that its effects on children are similar to those of traditional tobacco product advertisement and promotion.

About 33% of adolescent experimentation with smoking is a direct result of tobacco advertising and promotion.

Research shows that children who participate in promotional activities are over 9 times more likely to smoke than other children.

Simply knowing a friend participated in tobacco promotional activities makes youth about 3 times more likely to use tobacco.
