Has someone you love died from tobacco use?

Fact Sheet:  The Toll of Tobacco on Madison County, NY

Fact Sheet:  Cancer Burden ProfileMadison County, NY

Report:  The Burden of Cardiovascular Disease in New York State

What are our Goals?

Tobacco Free Madison County (TFMC) is a group of people concerned with tobacco-related issues.  The mission of TFMC is to prevent and reduce tobacco use in Madison County.

We are not an "anti-smoker" group.  We realize the tobacco industry has caused nicotine addiction by lying about their products and ingredients.  Tobacco kills approximately 50% of its regular users, so we encourage tobacco users quit with the help of the New York State Smokers' Quitline

Our main goals are:

bullet

To draw attention to the dangers of tobacco use and its impact on the health and economy of the county

bullet

To de-normalize tobacco use

bullet

To decrease exposure to secondhand smoke

bullet

To encourage local organizations to reduce and discontinue advertising and promoting tobacco products

bullet

To involve county residents in policy change projects

bullet

To utilize the media to promote our goals and encourage use of the New York State Smokers' Quitline

Services We Offer

bullet

TFMC has a lending library with educational materials, displays, games & activities, videos and presentations.

bullet

TFMC provides technical assistance and educational materials to local organizations facilities to develop, implement, and strengthen tobacco-related policies.

bullet

TFMC offers a tobacco gear amnesty program whereby anyone wishing to exchange gear with tobacco ads (t-shirts, etc.) can exchange it for another item with a smoke free message.  Click here for information.

Have you lost a Madison County friend or family member to a tobacco-related illness?

Tobacco use is the #1 cause of preventative death and preventable house fires.  Some of the illnesses caused by tobacco use and/or secondhand smoke are:  all kinds of cancers, stroke, heart disease, respiratory (breathing) problems, circulatory problems, Gangrene, all types of dental (tooth and mouth) problems, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, stomach ulcers, addiction, decreased fertility, loss of vision, hair loss, and Rheumatoid Arthritis.   It also worsens other medical problems, such as Diabetes.

We are creating a scrapbook to remember Madison County residents who have experienced illnesses from using tobacco or breathing secondhand smoke.  The purpose of the scrapbook is to make others aware of the devastating effects of the tobacco industry's lies.

The scrapbook is also in electronic (Powerpoint) format to be used for educational purposes at local events and presentations.  The presentation is very respectful and sympathetic towards tobacco users and juxtaposes their memorials with quotes and other proof that the tobacco industry knowingly deceives and addicts people.

If you would like to add your loved one's picture to our scrapbook, please mail a copy of a picture or an 8.5 x 11 inch scrapbook page to:  Tobacco Free Madison County, 3059 Seneca Turnpike, Canastota, NY 13032.  Please include the person's first name, age, and type of illness.

You may also email us a scan of the photo along with a brief story or memorial.

Click here for more information about the scrapbook.
